Fighter…

This aeroplane was shot at the Australian War Museum in very little light, and it was spot lit. Shooting at -1ev made the background black and brought the highlights back to something which the sensor could cope with. Hardware: Canon EOS 1D MkIIN, 50mm f/1.4 Exposure: ISO800, 1/25s @ f1.4 Post: Black point, sharpening.

Speedy…

Setting a slow shutter speed – by action photography standards – meant the wheels and background in this shot were blurred. Hardware: Canon EOS 1D MkIIN, 70-200 f/2.8L Exposure: ISO400 1/100s @ f/32, 105mm Post: Nothing significant.

Bike bag…

This rider has caught one of the sideline barriers on his footpeg but he kept going, hoping it would fall off. The shot isn’t fantastic, but it just shows how you need to be ready for action when it happens. Hardware: Canon EOS-1D MKIIN, EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, 580EX flash Exposure: ISO1600, 1/250s @ f/5,Continue reading “Bike bag…”

Racer…

Although it’s not as good as the latest cameras, my tough old EOS 1D MkIIN isn’t to bad at high ISO shooting – this image was made at 3200. It’s enabled me to shoot at 1/500, just enough to freeze the action of Australia’s best Supercross racer, Chad Reed. Hardware: Canon EOS 1D MkIIN, EFContinue reading “Racer…”

Bike 5…

Being able to compose this image so the background was another race bike – a clone of the subject – I think adds to the image. The sun had just disappeared behind a thin cloud and I quickly focussed on the first bike and captured the image. Seconds later the opportunity was gone as theContinue reading “Bike 5…”

Canberra Fireworks…

I’ve set ISO200 for this fireworks shot to reduce noise in the underexposed areas of the image – which there will be plenty of. In order to get a number of bursts on the frame I’ve set a long exposure and I’ve included the pole and edges of the buildings to give it all someContinue reading “Canberra Fireworks…”

Beached…

The Pasha Bulker coal boat beached itself at Nobby’s Beach, Newcastle, in 2006. This is my favourite image from the accident. EOS 1DMk2N, 24-105 f/4 @ 70mm, ISO 400, 1/1000 @ f/6.3, -.67 stop.
