By using the flash off camera I was able to direct light only on the face and hands. Hardware: Canon EOS 5D MkII, EF 24-105 f/4L, 580EX flash, off camera cord. Exposure: ISO500, 1/60s @ f/7.1, 50mm Post: Recovery, black point and sharpen adjustments. (Aperture)

Fascinated boy…
This one was worth going into Adobe Camera Raw for, something I rarely do. For this image though, recovering detail in the light panel my son is playingon while not losing control of the background made the effort worthwhile. Hardware: Canon EOS 5D Mk II, EF 24-105mm f/4L Exposure: ISO 3200, 1/50s @ f/7.1, 24mmContinue reading “Fascinated boy…”
Bike bag…
This rider has caught one of the sideline barriers on his footpeg but he kept going, hoping it would fall off. The shot isn’t fantastic, but it just shows how you need to be ready for action when it happens. Hardware: Canon EOS-1D MKIIN, EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, 580EX flash Exposure: ISO1600, 1/250s @ f/5,Continue reading “Bike bag…”
Protest…
I love the way this image has come together. It’s from a rally protesting the impositions being put on photographers in Australia, and a combination of having photographers in the image, a costumed protester, great placards (I especially love the lack of an apostrophe in ‘Don’t’ – it points to how photographers can’t spell) andContinue reading “Protest…”
Shifted dots…
Using the tilt feature on a Canon 24mm TS lens changes the plane of focus, so instead of everything at a particular distance from the camera being in focus, the sharp dots run diagonally. This draws the eye across the frame in an unusual way, giving the image it’s point of difference. Hardware: Canon 5DContinue reading “Shifted dots…”
Bee…
A little patience and capturing a Bee inside a flower isn’t too hard: getting one in focus is a bit tougher. Go high ISO. Hardware: Olympus E-P1, Zuiko 4-1150mm f/4-5.6 Exposure: ISO 400, 1/1500s @ f/5.6, 150mm Post: Cropped, selective burn, selective sharpen (bee), selective blur (rear flower).
Racer…
Although it’s not as good as the latest cameras, my tough old EOS 1D MkIIN isn’t to bad at high ISO shooting – this image was made at 3200. It’s enabled me to shoot at 1/500, just enough to freeze the action of Australia’s best Supercross racer, Chad Reed. Hardware: Canon EOS 1D MkIIN, EFContinue reading “Racer…”
