Waterfall…
Getting moving water to blur is easy: just select a long shutter speed. Doing so without a tripod requires image stabilisation, which is what’s helped here. Hardware: Olympus EP-1, Zuiko 40-150mm f/4-5.6 Exposure: ISO100, 1/3s @ f/14, shadow white balance Post: Cropped, Reduced exposure, Increased contrast, black point, desaturated slightly, sharpened.

Rusty…
This rusty bollard made for an interesting subject, especially with the strong side lighting. I shot it wide open to throw the wharf behind out of focus, and I deliberately underexposed from the meter reading: a dark subject will cause your meter to read high. Hardware: Canon EOS 5D MkII, 15-35mm f/2.8L Exposure: ISO100, 1/1250…

Bike 5…
Being able to compose this image so the background was another race bike – a clone of the subject – I think adds to the image. The sun had just disappeared behind a thin cloud and I quickly focussed on the first bike and captured the image. Seconds later the opportunity was gone as the…

Eiffel Tower at night
The Eiffel Tower at night is a spectacular sight, but it’s difficult to photograph without a tripod. I managed to get this image by loding my camera against a pole and gently releasing the shutter. I probably should have set the self timer and then composed, but this works for me. Hardware: Olympus EP-1, 17mm…

Canberra Fireworks…
I’ve set ISO200 for this fireworks shot to reduce noise in the underexposed areas of the image – which there will be plenty of. In order to get a number of bursts on the frame I’ve set a long exposure and I’ve included the pole and edges of the buildings to give it all some…

Thonged busker…
This Frenchman was playing near the Louvre, Paris, in an alcove of a stone building. The alcove’s acoustic qualities gave his music a surreal feel, and he was obviously enjoying his work: his eyes are shut in concentration and pleasure. I wanted to give a feeling of movement in this image, so I deliberately slowed…
